November 2005

I was studying Japanese at a coffee shop today when
a group of college aged students wandered in
One of the girls had a really nice Powerbook

I locked onto it and felt my bones become
lighter then air
A true geek is someone who appreciates
women not for their bodies
but for their laptops

As I was leaving
I said “Nice Computer”
She mouthed “Thank you…” and said
not a word
not distracted at all
It was as if I had said that
she was beautiful
and she got that from random strangers
all day long

I shall dream tonight
of her computer

I’ve been experimenting with Kale . Impressive stuff. For people that really like the smell of freshly mowed lawns, I recommend that they trot down to Whole Foods and pick up some kale and start grazing. You don’t even need to pay for it, ’cause when they see you gnawing on a bunch of fresh kale, they will stay far far away.

It’s kind of hard to cook because of it’s bitterness; one needs to cook it with something that has an even more empowering flavor. I’ve had mild success with Drano.

Also, Mollie Katzen doesn’t lie when she says that it keeps for around three days in a dry plastic bag. I bought some on Thursday, and right about now it smells like a cow up and died in my refrigerator. This presents a minor problem; A single guy like me can’t afford to buy food buy the pound when it’s in a hurry to get to the steady white light (as opposed to the refrigerator light… never mind). So maybe I’m stuck to buying what I need the night I need it.

The drawback of course is that I can’t buy “1/2 cups fresh Kale, chopped,” I can only get it by the pound. But I don’t foresee myself needing kale anytime soon, so I think I’m ok.

So the girl that had a rough day had another rotten Monday. Same guy came in and borrowed some money. Shorter note this time, and he did some holiday card shopping while he “did the job”.

I guess that the owner installed a security system over the weekend, but forgot to test it. The Audio cables were swapped with the video cables on the recording device, leaving the cops with sound but no picture, so they still haven’t got any good ideas on how to get this guy picked up. I’m finding this pretty amusing in an awkward sort of way, although I wish that my neighbor didn’t have to worry about that kind of thing going into work. It does make me wonder what kind of idiot would rob the same place twice in a few weeks. (Can’t find a job? Have you tried day labor? A gas station?).

Anyway, I also mentioned that some of my neighbors got their cars broken into. Well, this happens to be the same girl (and her live in boyfriend). So they’re having a good weekend, yes.

(Normally sleep pretty much all weekend, so this is “Busy For Me”. Alright?)

Saturday:

  • Drove down to the Springs and lost $70 in poker. No hard feelings.
  • Tried to go see Harry Potter with someone. Resigned myself to seeing it alone… but decided too late. to actually see it. Stayed up late trying to get Rose Garden working on my new box.

Sunday:

  • Played 3 sets of tennis (singles!). Been a while since I’ve played three sets. You know the term “Dead Man Walking?” Well, that was me after game 6 of the third set, where I went down from 5-2 to lose 5-7. Just sort of ran out of gas.
  • Went to Comedy Works and saw Costaki Economopoulos. Funny stuff. But what was even funnier: If you’ve never been to Comedy Works, they happen to be in the basement of some building downtown. Being in a basement implies stairs, which is fine. For me at least. But the people I was going with, one was in a wheel chair, and another only has one leg, and a good “fake leg” as I call it. She needs crutches to walk around though.

So Comedy Works has an elevator, but they couldn’t use it because of “Fire Code”. (Seriously, that’s what they said). So the guy in the chair had to be carried down, and later back up. Sarah had an easier time, we just had to carry one of her high tech crutches, while a few hundred people behind us waited embarassed as we slowly crept up the stairs.

c’mon people! Let ‘em use the bleeding elevator!

Anyway…

Well, the masked bandits that occasionally break into the cars in my parking lot struck again. Luckily, since I have a new car they had enough sense to stay the heck away. Bunch of my neighbors got cleaned out pretty good though.

What’s sad is that there have been some pretty good security improvements over the last year. The crooks keep getting braver. Too bad they can’t just get a job…

My wrists are a little bit better. I’m afraid that I might need to see the doctor again on Monday (can you say “Pre-existing conditions”?). Anyway, I have been able to recover the site from the crash(es) and then I upgraded the box to Mandriva Linux 2006.. Now all I have to do is catch up on some email…

I shouldn’t be typing this because my wrists are still messed up but…

I get home from work/errands today and one of my neighbors was sitting in front of her apartment. Smoking and drinking, which she normally doesn’t do. Anyway, she asks how my day was, so I raised my splints and kind of shrugged. Not bad, but not all that good either, I guess. So I asked her how her day went, expecting small talk.

“I got robbed today!” She says.

Good grief. All of a sudden my day looks really rosy. The story is that she works at a Hallmark store, and some guy came in and handed her a note. She was ok, but kind of shaken up. I asked her if Hallmark had any “I’m sorry you got robbed cards” and she laughed. Then I came in and wrote this, and then I stopped because my wrists hurt way too much.
